MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - 2014 The time is upon us to for a Membership Drive for new members and membership renewals. If you would like to check on your membership status, call 516-625-4363. We take this opportunity to update you about our programming going forward as well as our accomplishments over the past year. We celebrated our 50th anniversary year in style and there is more to come! Being a Roslyn Landmark Society member has its privileges. We work hard to provide you with experiences you won't have anywhere else - all with topics of art, architecture and the history of Roslyn, local communities, the Gold Coast of Long Island and beyond in mind. This past year, we provided an outstanding historic walking tour through the Roslyn Heights Historic District, where we not only viewed houses from the street, we were privileged to be able to take our group inside the private homes and gardens of three RLS members. We also hosted a summer cocktail party at the spectacular historic home of yet another RLS member, followed by a lecture with a celebrated author about the history of Long Island's Gilded Age. We have had historians talk to our groups on everything from the Long Island mansions to Coney Island - all of great interest to our membership. For the first time, we held events at the Village Hall of Roslyn and the Roslyn School of Painting. RLS also organized a visit to the grounds of Cedarmere for a nature walk with an expert horticulturist in honor of Earth Day this spring. We also keep you up to date with Friends of Cedarmere activities and news. We have successfully collaborated with other organizations, including SPLIA (Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities) and Jones Beach Rescue to offer lectures on the Vanderbilt family, historic preservation projects and more. RLS created the "Landmarks of Roslyn" exhibit, filled with vintage photographs and memorabilia from our own archives and the collections of RLS members to coordinate with a well-known traveling photography exhibit, "Landmarks of New York" displayed at the Bryant Library. Along with Roslyn Continuing Education, we offered day trips to places of cultural interest, including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortland Manor, Dia:Beacon and Locust Grove estate. We thank the Atria of Roslyn for sponsoring many of our events. Our relationships with local vendors, such as The Meat House and Diane's Bakery, are always valuable when we create our programs. RLS continues to work on several restoration projects, including the Roslyn Grist Mill, Cedermere Mill, Jerusha Dewey Cottage and the Mackay Horse statue - all significant historical preservation of which our founder Dr. Gerry would be proud. SPECIAL OFFER TO NEW AND RENEWING MEMBERS! Join the Roslyn Landmark Society as a new or renewing member now and receive a FREE TWO YEAR SUBSCRIPTION TO THE ROSLYN TIMES!
